Rangers legend Brian Laudrup warns old club of RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku

Rangers hero Brian Laudrup has pinpointed RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku as the one to watch on Thursday night.

The Gers travel to the Red Bull Arena to take on the German side who currently sit 4th in the Bundesliga table.

Ibrox icon Laudrup, who netted 41 goals in 147 games for the Glasgow giants, knows a thing or two about finding the back of the net and has warned his old club of Leipzig’s French superstar.

In his latest column for the Daily Mail, Laudrup commented: “Rangers have shown great determination and tactical intelligence to get this far. More of the same in Germany on Thursday night can keep the tie very much alive and set up a real shot at reaching Seville inside Ibrox next week.

“I think their key to progression might well lie in limiting the influence of a player who has been directly involved in no fewer than 50 goals for RB Leipzig this season.

“Christopher Nkunku has been in incredible form. Leipzig have talent throughout their side, that’s obvious. To me, though, Nkunku is the one on a different level.

“Curb him as much as possible and the path to another remarkable aggregate victory could open up. That’s easier said than done, of course. With 30 goals and 20 assists across all competitions, Nkunku’s numbers are eye-popping. It’s not about one individual being tasked to shut him out of the game.

“It will take a team effort to monitor his movement, allied with excellent communication and decision-making. A huge task? Yes. But it’s not beyond this Rangers team.”

Mission Impossible?

Many fans and pundits alike felt it was a step too far for the Scottish Premiership champions when Borussia Dortmund came out of the hat in the Round of 32, but a historic 4-2 win in Germany shook the competition as the Gers held on to their aggregate lead with a draw at Ibrox.

Impressive knockout victories against Red Star Belgrade and Braga followed, but it’s now another top German opponent that awaits Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s side on Thursday night as they take on RB Leipzig in a tough Semi-Final.

Having been made heavy underdogs to win the game at the Red Bull Arena, and an even higher underdog to win the whole competition, it’s safe to say the Glasgow side are up against it for both legs of their Europa League Semi-Final.

That won’t put off the Gers though, who reached this stage in 2008 as they knocked out Fiorentina on penalties to reach the Final.

Leipzig come into Thursday night’s match after a 2-1 defeat at home to Union Berlin on Saturday whilst Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s men were victorious at Motherwell.
