Dermot Gallagher shocked by Leon Balogun tackle in Rangers win v Motherwell
Rangers defender Leon Balogun stunned ex-FIFA referee Dermot Gallagher with his tackle that earned him a red card against Motherwell at the weekend.
Balogun was given a straight red card after less than half an hour at Fir Park during the Ibrox side’s 3-1 win at the weekend, meaning he will be unavailable for the Old Firm derby on Sunday.
But while appearing on ‘Ref Watch’ on Sky Sports, Gallagher admitted he was stunned by the tackle and said it would be a red card all the time because he went over the ball.
“One word Rob. Wow,” he said.
“That will always be a red card when you make a challenge like that. He goes over the ball.”
The club are not expected to appeal the decision and Balogun didn’t make much a scene after being shown the card, suggesting they all agree that it was a bad tackle.
Balogun is a great defender and has been a very good player during his Ibrox career, and sometimes things just happen on a pitch that you can’t explain.
In fairness to Balogun, he wins the ball first but his foot is fractionally too high and ends up rolling over the ball and catching the Motherwell man on the ankle.
It’s high and dangerous and a red card, but had his foot been an inch or two lower initially then he wins the ball cleanly and there’s no issue with the tackle at all.
Now being 33-years-old the Nigeria international knows he did wrong and will take his punishment, but it doesn’t take away from his abilities and the club should still be looking at his future.
His current deal is set to expire at the end of the season but with an option to extend the deal, he is expected to stay for another year.
