Ibrox View: Leon Balogun disgraceful - Rangers player ratings in huge win v Motherwell

Rangers travelled to Fir Park this afternoon to take on Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst made a bold call and made eight changes to his starting XI, with only James Tavernier, Connor Goldson and Borna Barisic keeping their spots.

Goals from Scott Wright, a potential own goal and Tavernier sealed all three points in a 3-1 win despite Leon Balogun being sent off in the opening 45 minutes.

Here’s how Ibrox News rated the players out of 10 below…

Allan McGregor – 5

Had no real saves to make on what could have been a much busier afternoon for the veteran, nothing he could do about the goal.

James Tavernier – 7

It was a strange afternoon for the skipper. Tavernier was at the heart of most attacks after the red card, charging forward down the right, but his delivery into the box was average, to say the least. In typical fashion though, he stood up and smashed home the penalty when he was needed.

Connor Goldson – 9

Gigantic at the back today. The big defender has taken his fair share of criticism in recent months, but he was huge at keeping the home side largely at bay after the sending off in the opening half an hour.

Leon Balogun – 1

Shocker. With the game in control after going ahead early, the Nigerian lost his head and put in a dreadful challenge that he simply didn’t need to make, and one that could have cost us everything.

Borna Barisic – 6

Barisic has nailed down his spot in the side in recent weeks and was solid enough again today. The sending off really saw his attacking threat neutralised, but that didn’t take away from his overall performance.

Steven Davis – 8

The dictator. There are not many better in the game who can control a game like Davis can, and he did it once again today in the heart of midfield. Despite this being only his second start of the season, it was like he had never been away.

Scott Arfield – 6

Another solid afternoon of work for the Canadian, who often doesn’t catch the headlines, but will run himself into the ground. Having his and Davis’ experience in the middle of the park certainly helped those around them.

Glen Kamara – 5

It wasn’t the best of afternoons for Kamara at Fir Park. The Finland international was poor in the lead up to the Motherwell goal, where he could have cleared but instead didn’t and slipped. After that, he settled but may have picked up an injury concern.

Scott Wright – 9

Man of the Match. If you wanted to catch the eye of your manager, this is exactly the way to do it. Wright was superb in the final third and may have grabbed two (depending on the goals panel), but he certainly deserves it. His non-stop running and defensive work were top notch.

Amad Diallo – 4

Mainly due to his lack of minutes after he was dragged off after the sending off. Diallo showed some bright glimpses and it was dreadful luck that he was the man sacrificed.

Fashion Sakala – 7

When he was needed to step up in that centre-forward role, the Zambian certainly did and never stopped running on and off the ball. Sakala was excellent in earning the penalty to seal all three points, and did everything but score in the end.

Rangers Substitutes: Calvin Bassey – 7, Joe Aribo – 5, James Sands – 6, Cedric Itten – N/A, Leon King – N/A.
