Ally McCoist floored by Rangers injury blow to Kemar Roofe this week

Ally McCoist has been floored by the “massive” news of Kemar Roofe picking up a fresh injury for Rangers this week.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst confirmed that the Jamaican will miss games with Motherwell, RB Leipzig and Celtic before returning.

With Alfredo Morelos also out, McCoist clearly wasn’t confident in Fashion Sakala potentially filling that role in the final third.

Speaking live on BT Sports Scottish Football Extra last night [22 April], McCoist didn’t understate the blow.

“It’s a massive blow,” he said.

“Let’s not kid ourselves on, the chances of Rangers regaining the title are very, very slim. The European thing is a big, big disappointment, missing Morelos is one thing.

“We saw the game in Braga, Giovanni played Sakala up front and it didn’t work. The fact of the matter is it’s a massive blow.”

Darrell Currie also responded to the news and it was clear just how big of a blow this could be for the club.

“It’s a huge blow.”

Only option?

So, it looks as though it will be Sakala leading the line across this huge week in the context of our success this season.

Van Bronckhorst will hopefully have had him working closely with Roy Makaay at Auchenhowie, with the former striker electric in front of the goal.

Sakala has all the attributes needed to become a real handful in the final third with his pace, it is just all about how he uses it.

The Zambian rarely made runs in behind against Braga for whatever reason, and he must do that now, starting against Motherwell.

No defence is going to really be able to keep up with him, he just has to be smart when he sets off on these runs.

The dart across Carl Starfelt led to him scoring that own goal and beating Celtic last week, that is what we need more of.

As for Roofe, let’s hope that he can recover quicker than is expected.
