Rangers want to sign Sunderland striker Ross Stewart

Rangers are in a three-way race to sign Sunderland striker Ross Stewart in the summer with two English clubs, according to the Northern Echo.

The 25-year-old has been sensational for the Black Cats this season but they still look outsiders at best for automatic promotion from League One despite his joint league-leading 22 goals.

Premier League Norwich City and Championship Swansea City are also named clubs interested in the Scot who could be angling for a move away from the Stadium of Light if promotion is not achieved this season.

The ‘Loch Ness Drogba’, as the Sunderland fans call him, did have a brief spell in the Celtic academy as a youngster but broke into senior football with Ardeer Thistle.

He most recently graced Scottish football with Ross County before leaving for the Black Cats in 2021.

No competition

When Stewart looks at the three options in front of him, there can surely only be one winner and that is Rangers.

Swansea are nowhere near the Championship promotion race in 14th while Norwich sit rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, destined to return to the second tier once again.

He will almost certainly want to play top division football wherever he goes and he won’t be getting that at either of the other options on the table.

That leaves Rangers as the only place for him with not just top-flight football but a chance of a league title as well as European games under the lights at Ibrox.

It is a very difficult proposition for any player to turn down and being from Scotland, he might be even more enticed to return to his homeland with the Light Blues.

It will obviously come at a price but with Alfredo Morelos potentially heading for the exit door in the summer, Stewart might be the perfect replacement Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been searching for.

In other Rangers news, Aaron Ramsey has dropped an update on his future at Ibrox after breaking into the starting XI in recent weeks.
