Nacho Novo surprised with Steven Davis situation at Rangers

Nacho Novo has been left surprised that Steve Davis has barely played for Rangers this season.

The veteran midfielder came off the bench on Sunday and produced a fabulous performance as the Gers won 4-0 against St Mirren.

With John Lundstram doubtful, Novo wants to see the Northern Ireland midfielder getting a chance in the upcoming games.

“I’m surprised Steven’s not played a bit more under Giovanni,” said the former Gers player, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“To be honest, he is the best midfielder at Rangers. There’s no doubt about it – he can still go. He is so fit he can probably play til he’s 40.

“He is a great player. I don’t know what happens on the training ground or what Gio sees so I can’t comment on why he’s not played so much.

“But if it was down to me – he would play every game. He has years left in him. He is fit and dictating games. He is a great player.”

Spot on

The 37-year-old midfielder may have lost his sharpness a bit, but he is still a top-class player.

Davis has struggled with fitness this season, but it comes as a surprise really that he hasn’t got enough games under Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The veteran midfielder has been consistently overlooked.

If Lundstram fails to recover before Thursday, Van Bronckhorst should use Davis in midfield after his assured and controlled performance last Sunday.

Rangers looked a far better side when Davis came on, and the Dutchman has a big question to solve – whether to bring the veteran midfielder into the starting line-up against Braga.

Rangers

Lundstram has been superb alongside Ryan Jack this season, forgoing a strong midfield partnership. He has picked up a groin injury and the Dutchman is not sure whether the former Sheffield United midfielder will be able to feature on Thursday.

Rangers are 1-0 behind from the first leg, and they need a strong performance at Ibrox to secure their passage into the semi-finals.
