Kris Boyd baffled by Kemar Roofe’s lack of minutes for Rangers this season

Kris Boyd says it is ‘baffling’ that Kemar Roofe hasn’t played more for Rangers this season after his hat-trick in the 4-0 win over St Mirren.

Roofe was excellent before being replaced after 62 minutes as Giovanni van Bronckhorst looked to keep him fresh for the midweek Europa League game against Braga at Ibrox.

But Boyd, who was working on Sky Sports as a pundit for the game, said during the half-time break that he can’t understand why the boss hasn’t used him more this season.

“He will score goals, he gets himself in the right position,” he said. “And why it has taken so long to get him in the starting 11, especially in games like this, is baffling.

“But we are here today and he has scored two great goals.”

Van Bronckhorst’s squad management has certainly been a big question mark about his tenure so far, and Roofe’s performance showed why.

The over-reliance on Alfredo Morelos this season has ultimately back-fired as he picked up a season-ending injury, and there was no clear alternative for him up front.

A lack of match rhythm and sharpness undoubtedly contributed towards his poor performance against Celtic, but added time on the pitch means he can get closer to his best.

Goals are exactly what Rangers need and Roofe has a good record of providing them, but to ask him to come in cold in a high pressure situation is unfair. It was a recipe for disaster from the start and everyone saw it coming.

Now he’s firing and prepared to go into battle, Rangers are a big threat once again and they will hope he can do the business once again this Thursday.
