Van Bronckhorst doesn’t trust Borna Barisic, Rangers left-back headed for Ibrox exit – Kris Boyd

Kris Boyd suggests Giovanni van Bronckhorst doesn’t fully trust Borna Barisic and believes the left-back could leave Rangers in the summer.

Barisic, 29, has endured a woeful season at Ibrox and has seen himself lose his spot at starting left-back to Calvin Bassey.

He’s started just three of the last nine Scottish Premiership fixtures, none of the last three Europa League games and also missed the Scottish Cup quarter-final win over Dundee.

Ex-Rangers striker Boyd is unsure of Barisic’s future at Ibrox ahead of the Croatian starting at St Mirren on Sunday.

“I’ve said it before, I don’t think that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has got full trust in a lot of his players,” said Boyd on Sky Sports Football ahead of the Gers’ clash with St Mirren on Sunday [10 April, 11:40am].

“Borna Barisic is one of them.

“His confidence took a massive dip after that heavy Old Firm defeat and he’s not quite recovered.

“Today is an opportunity for him to come in and go and show he is a good player.

“He’s been a good player for Rangers for a number of seasons and hopefully he can resurrect his Rangers career because, as it stands right now, it’s only going one way – and that’s probably out of the door in the summer.”

Time to go?

Barisic is among the high earners at Ibrox and has another two years left on his contract so maybe it is time to move on the Croatia international.

Football Insider reported in February 2020 that Barisic’s contract is worth over £20,000-a-week with Alfredo Morelos, at the time, being the top earner at £30,000-a-week.

Is it worthwhile for Rangers to have Barisic as their second-choice left-back when he’s earning that much money?

Probably not.

The ex-Osijek ace did have a good game in the win over St Mirren on Sunday but one performance against the Buddies isn’t going to change our mind.

He was terrible against Celtic earlier this year. He was so bad it was embarrassing.

Rangers need a bit of an overhaul in the summer so getting rid of Barisic and bringing in someone else would be a clever idea.

In other Rangers news, the Gers are readying a bid to sign this left-footed ace who supports a rival club.
