Michael Stewart stunned by what BBC Sportscene host told him off-air about Rangers star Kemar Roofe

Michael Stewart was stunned to hear from Steven Thompson that Kemar Roofe now has 15 goals in all competitions for Rangers this season.

Roofe, 29, grabbed a hat-trick for the Light Blues on Sunday as they won 4-0 away at St Mirren to keep themselves in the fight for the Scottish Premiership title.

He’s been in and out of the side this season due to selection and injury issues but has remained a consistent goalscorer for the Glasgow giants.

Stewart admits that he’s surprised by Roofe’s goal return in what he deems to be a sub-par season for the Jamaica forward.

“It’s [15] goals, it’s a pretty good return,” said Thompson on BBC Scotland’s Sportscene on Sunday night [10 April, 07:35pm]

Stewart then replied, saying: “When you told me that stat earlier on, I’ve got to be honest, I was surprised.”

When told it’s in all competitions, Stewart added: “Yes, I know. But even still there’s that perception it’s not been a great season for Kemar Roofe and it probably hasn’t.

“But, still. [15] goals is not bad.”

Under-rated

Roofe isn’t an out-and-out goalscorer.

When he joined Rangers, we didn’t expect him to light up the goalscoring charts and we didn’t expect him to take Alfredo Morelos’ spot in the starting line-up.

However, in Roofe, the Gers have a forward who puts himself about, links play up well, puts in 110 per cent effort and rarely wastes good chances to score.

His tally of 15 goals in 33 games this term is brilliant.

And what makes that even more brilliant is the fact that he’s started just 15 of those matches.

If you think Roofe has had a bad season, you need to give your head a wobble because the former West Brom and Leeds attacker has been as consistent as you can get when he does play.

Injuries have always been an issue for Roofe throughout his career so we cannot complain about that.

But we do have someone who is capable of filling Morelos’ boots in matches like this one against the Buddies.

In other Rangers news, Andy Walker raged over an “awful” moment he noticed in the win over St Mirren.
