Andy Halliday blames Rangers board for transfer failure

Andy Halliday has blamed the Rangers board for poor signings in the January transfer window.

The Gers saw a dip in form after January, and eventually, they find themselves six points behind Celtic after losing 2-1 at Ibrox on Sunday.

The title race is almost as good as over, and Halliday is not happy with how the Gers have approached the window.

While the January signings failed to make an impact at Ibrox, Halliday points out that signings made by Celtic have improved their squad which actually saw a change in fortunes over the course of the season.

Halliday said on Open Goal: “You look at back at January when Rangers had that lead.

“Celtic brought in Hatate, Ideguchi, Maeda; they improved their team, improved their squad, improved their starting 11.

“Rangers brought in Diallo, who’s not kicked a ball, played about one game. Ramsey has started three games and now we’re in April.

“The Polish back-up right-back (Mateusz Zukowski) has started one game and it was against Annan. And Sands who’s hardly played. So that was what Rangers added to their squad.

“So for me, criticism for the board, criticism for people who are making decisions in terms of recruitment, and obviously the staff and players will get it as well.

“I can’t remember the last time Rangers spent a transfer fee. Rangers bought Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten because they thought Alfredo Morelos was leaving. They brought them in to replace him.

“But they’re nowhere near the same team when Morelos isn’t playing.”

Massive summer

Halliday is spot on here. The likes of Amad Diallo and James Sands have been really disappointing, while Aaron Ramsey has only managed a handful of games.

The summer transfer window is going to be massive for the club.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has inherited the squad from Steven Gerrard and it’s unfair to blame after one transfer window.

He needs to bring in three to four quality players who can big difference to the first team.

Alfredo Morelos will enter the final year of his contract and chances are high that he will leave the club this summer.

Surely, Rangers won’t want to lose him for free, rather they should be aiming to get the maximum price out of his sale.

Connor Goldson is another player who is set to leave as a free agent. Rangers have already signed his replacement with John Souttar waiting to join the Gers in the summer after agreeing pre-contract in January.

In other Rangers news, we believe Giovanni van Bronckhorst will make two changes for the Europa League game against Braga on Thursday.
