Kenny Miller: ‘Long way back’ for Rangers to win title after Celtic defeat

Kenny Miller says it is a ‘long way back’ for Rangers now in the Scottish Premiership title race after defeat to Celtic in the Old Firm derby on Sunday.

The light blues were beaten 2-1 at Ibrox after taking the lead by their fierce rivals, meaning they are now six points behind the league leaders with six games to go.

Miller, who played for both teams, told talkSPORT’s breakfast show [April 4, 9:39] that it’s now ‘highly unlikely’ Rangers retain their crown considering the good form Celtic are in currently.

“It’s a long way back for Rangers now,” he said.

“I know everybody throws the ‘it’s mathematically still possible’ that Rangers can win it, but when Celtic are unbeaten in the league since October, they’re going to need to probably lose two or even three games depending on how Rangers do in the final six, it is highly unlikely.

“They’re just in some really, really good form at the moment and yesterday was such a big game.

“You know, that was going to be the outcome if Celtic win the game but that’s why I thought if Rangers don’t lose it’s still there and if they could’ve won it it was game on. But if they lost it, for me, it’s going to be a long, long way back now.”

Redemption

The title is gone now and it’s fair to say most fans are on the same page when it comes to that, but there is still opportunity for redemption for this squad.

They have a huge Europa League quarter-final tie against Braga over the next two weeks which could set up a semi-final against RB Leipzig or Atalanta and a potential final with Barcelona.

But on top of that, they also play Celtic again in two weeks in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Parkhead where they can put an end to Celtic’s treble hopes.

A win in those games would go a long way to getting fans back on side for Giovanni van Bronckhorst after back-to-back Old Firm defeats, and would set up the final league game against Celtic perfectly too.

The title may be gone but there is plenty for Rangers still to play for, so they must get their heads down and focus rather than dwell.
