Ally McCoist blasts Ryan Kent for ‘inexcusable’ error in Rangers v Celtic

Ally McCoist slammed winger Ryan Kent for his inability to stay onside as Rangers lost 2-1 to Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday.

Kent, 25, started the Old Firm clash brilliantly but started to fade once Celtic took the lead.

He was later flagged by the linesman for being offside in a good attacking situation for the Light Blues.

McCoist, who was working as a pundit on Sky Sports, was clearly frustrated by that and an earlier incident when Connor Goldson conceded a soft offside.

“It’s inexcusable,” said McCoist on Sky Sports Football on Sunday [3 April, 12:30pm].

“Goldson’s done the exact same thing – you must look along the line.

“It’s a brilliant ball from Lundstram. I thought, initially, the pass was for Bassey.

“You’ve got absolutely no need to be offside there.”

Schoolboy stuff

Celtic didn’t defend very well on Sunday, especially in the full-back area.

There’s absolutely no reason why players like Kent or Goldson should be straying offside either in open play when the ball is halfway up the pitch or at set-pieces.

If you’re trying to make a run on the defence to get in on goal, then it’s worth the risk. But what’s the point in set-piece situations?

We’ve got to admit that the decisions by the referee and linesmen were fairly good, on the whole, in an electric Old Firm derby game that didn’t seem to have many pauses.

And when that’s happening, players need to be more careful about going offside because, as McCoist says, it’s inexcusably, really.

Kent has been due a good Old Firm performance for some time and unfortunately, we got one for just four or five minutes on Sunday.

Will he be sold in the summer? There’s a good chance.

And in all honesty, he’s someone who we can upgrade upon fairly easily because the consistency issues over the last few years are very frustrating.
