Rangers early team news v Celtic: Alfredo Morelos one of two players ruled out

Alfredo Morelos will not be available for Rangers when they face Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has confirmed.

Speaking to the media today (1 April), van Bronckhorst suggested there’ll be more information about Morelos’ injury issue next week after the 25-year-old striker suffered a muscle problem while on international duty with Colombia.

As quoted by Rangers’ official Twitter account, van Bronckhorst said: “Morelos will be assessed and hopefully we can give more news after the weekend.

“Unfortunately for all of us he won’t be with us on Sunday, we won’t have him back in the next couple of weeks.”

The Dutchman added that Ianis Hagi and Morelos are the only two players ruled out of the upcoming Old Firm.

“All the players returned fit, only Hagi & Morelos are missing,” said van Bronckhorst.

Must-win

Rangers cannot afford to drop any points in this game because even if they draw against Celtic on Sunday, it’ll be a positive for the Hoops.

Going into the penultimate Scottish Premiership Old Firm derby of the season, Rangers are three points behind Celtic.

Ange Postecoglou’s side always has a massive goal difference advantage, meaning the gap is more like four points.

It’ll be very tough for the Gers to catch up with their goal difference unless there’s an absolute mauling of the Bhoys this weekend so it just strengthens the emphasis on winning this.

At Ibrox, we’ve been great in the Old Firm lately so we do expect van Bronckhorst to win against Celtic for the first time as the Gers manager.

If we lose, the title race is as good as over. If we draw, we’ll have to win at Celtic Park after the split and also hope they drop points.

If we win, it’s all to play for.

Momentum is everything.
