Australian newspapers react as Rangers back out of Sydney Super Cup, ‘legal action’ mooted
Australian newspapers have shared how the Sydney Super Cup organisers are angry with Rangers for backing out of the competition later this year.
The Gers have been accused of bowing down to fan pressure and there’s even the chance that they could be punished with legal action.
On Thursday [31 March], the reigning Scottish champions confirmed they’ll be backing out of the controversial tournament, that involves Celtic.
The Athletic reported that Rangers felt there were “breaches in the contract, which included a failure to recognise the Old Firm brand in all branding”.
However, the Aussie press seems to be laying the blame at the foot of the Glaswegians.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the Light Blues “could face legal action” after snubbing the competition.
It is understood that TEG and Left Field Live, who are promoting the event that takes place later this year while the World Cup is on, have returned accused Rangers of “bowing to fan pressure and letting down their Australian-based supporters”.
The Australian Daily Telegraph adds that the “furious” Sydney Super Cup organisers “deny claims of unfulfilled commitments by Scottish giants Rangers”.

So what?
Rangers should never have been involved in this in the first place.
We’re still angry with the club for thinking that this was a good idea by any stretch of the imagination.
We cannot fathom as to why they thought it would be a good idea to take the Gers to Australia to play against Celtic, who are managed by an Aussie, in a friendly.
It’s effectively a homecoming tour for Ange Postecoglou and the Ibrox board thought it would be great if they were to be involved in that.
Celtic won’t even call us by our name, they hate us. They despise our very existence and the board thought it would be good to become a sideshow in their homecoming for their manager?
It’s disgraceful and thankfully, it’s been put to bed now.
However, it does look as though the organisers are – rightly – angry about the Light Blues’ U-turn.
There could be one or two stories that rumble on for several months but for us fans, the worst is over.
In other Rangers news, Alan Brazil made a big admission about the upcoming Old Firm after what Ally McCoist said to him.
