Recurring Rangers injuries have frustrated Steven Davis

The Rangers midfield is one of the most hotly contested in all of Scottish football and one player has found himself on the fringes as a result.

Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis has played just 12 games this season with recurring injuries preventing him from properly contesting a place in the side.

He’s seen teenager Alex Lowry emerge and become an added speed bump on his road to a first-team start with Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, John Lundstram and Ryan Jack also proving a hindrance to the 37-year-old.

Davis made 370 appearances across two five-season spells at Rangers.

“It’s always frustrating working by yourself at times in terms of the rehab,” Davis said, as quoted by Glasgow World.

“Obviously I’ve missed some big games for my club. Just whenever I felt I was getting myself into a position where I could push for a place in the team again, I picked up another injury.

“Unfortunately, that’s part and parcel of football but thankfully there have been minor injuries. Unfortunately, they were two injuries back-to-back.

“The key for me is just to get back into the rhythm of training and hopefully get more game time on a regular basis.”

Transition time

His desire to continue captaining his country at any given opportunity is still burning brightly but he is rapidly approaching the period where he can’t keep up the level of performance needed.

His lack of fitness this season has been a particular worry for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and it’s no surprise that his chances at Ibrox have been very limited.

Maybe now is the time for Davis to hang up his playing boots and transition into being a coach for some of the highly-talented young players trying to make a name for themselves in the Rangers youth teams.

Charlie McCann is one player who Davis could help massively as both are eligible to play for Northern Ireland too as well as being teammates in Glasgow.

He’s had a wonderful career in the game but time is nearly up for the 37-year-old.
