Rangers midfielder Steven Davis opens up on contract talks

Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has suggested that his situation hasn’t changed as his contract is set to expire in a few months’ time.

The Northern Ireland midfielder is an experienced player at the club, and Steven Gerrard was keen to secure his stay for one extra year.

Under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, it’s not clear what the Gers are likely to do with him.

“I think I got asked about it so many times in the last campaign it maybe was a little bit frustrating but I can understand coming up to the summer and being out of contract and everything that comes with that,” said Davis, as quoted by The Belfast Telegraph.

“It’s the same situation I’ve been in these last couple of years in terms of contract talks only coming to fruition at this kind of stage.”

New deal?

The former Southampton midfielder will face a home friendly against Hungary on Wednesday, having netted in Friday’s 3-1 victory in Luxembourg.

He is still going strong and has not hinted at retirement at the moment.

However, he is aware of his contract situation, and his physical condition. It has been tough for him this season as he picked up back-to-back injuries.

Davis has still managed 24 appearances in all competitions this season, which shows his importance to the side.

It remains to be seen if Rangers allow him to stay for one more year and help the team to progress, especially if they end up winning the SPFL title once more.

However, he is not that sharp anymore, and the club should think of replacing him with young talents.

The Gers have shown that they are willing to run down contracts of key players, a la Connor Goldson, and Davis could face the same treatment.
