Aston Villa set to win race for Rangers starlet Rory Wilson – report

Rangers starlet Rory Wilson is set to sign for Aston Villa after they beat off competition from three other Premier League clubs, according to The Sun.

Wilson is highly rated at Ibrox and the club have offered him his first professional contract, but reports suggest the 16-year-old has rejected their initial approach.

Manchester United, Man City and Liverpool were all linked but it’s now believed that Steven Gerrard’s side have moved to the front of the queue for the ‘wonderkid’.

Wilson has scored 40-goals for the Rangers youth team this season already and scored twice for the Scotland Under-17’s against Czech Republic last week to add to his ever-growing reputation.

Rangers would be due compensation if he were to leave the club, with The Sun claiming they would be owed around £300,000 for a player who has yet to appear for the first-team.

Blow

Wilson is largely considered as the future of the Rangers attack, so losing him is a massive blow to the club hierarchy.

It’s through no fault of their own though, as they offered him professional terms and had hoped to get something sorted. However it seems as though the lure of England’s top flight is too much for him to ignore.

Ex-Gers manager Gerrard is likely to have been aware of Wilson’s talents having been at the club as recently as this season, so it’s no surprise he’s got his new club to make their move.

Wilson feel likely feel as though Gerrard can make the Midlands feel like a home away from home such is his familiarity, while he’d probably be on a more lucrative contract in England too.

It’s a big loss for Rangers but earning a six-figure sum for a player who’s never made a squad in the first-team due to his age is good business.
