Rangers v Celtic Australia appears to be in big trouble

The Sydney Super Cup looks “increasingly unlikely” to feature Rangers since the club have not promoted any ticket sales, according to Rangers Review.

The controversial plans to stage an Old Firm friendly in Australia during the November World Cup break have been met with fury from fans who disrupted the win over Dundee last weekend in protest.

A recent report on Twitter from Jason Pine of Sky Sports New Zealand suggested the proposed tournament was in “serious doubt” and Rangers Review understands that is still “an accurate reflection” of the situation, while speculating that the club may be in “legal talks” that cannot yet be announced publicly.

Their report says: “Aroused passions and competing interests make this topic a difficult one to address coldly.

“However, as it stands, everything points to the Sydney Super Cup being increasingly unlikely to go ahead as an Old Firm event.

“A clear indicator of the current position of Rangers can be seen in the contrast with rivals Celtic who have promoted tickets for the event in the days since it was announced on social media and their website.

“The Ibrox club remains inactive in this regard with nothing on their various platforms to showcase the availability of briefs.”

Drama dragging

This entire unedifying spectacle may be heading towards a conclusion if this report is right.

Nothing good has come of it, with unnecessary rancour stoked up between the board, the fans, the players, ex-players and former executives.

Previous chairman Dave King had offered an “escape route” (Scottish Sun) this week, saying he would foot the bill for lost revenue.

The sooner this issue is put to bed the better, so everyone involved can try to concentrate on challenging for this season’s honours.
