‘We’ll see’ – Steven Davis discusses Rangers future with contract nearing expiry

Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has admitted he could leave the club when his contract expires this summer, but says his full focus is on getting fit again.

Davis has been at the club since returning in 2019, having previously spent four-and-a-half years at Ibrox between 2008 and 2012.

But since the arrival of Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November Davis hasn’t featured much, albeit due to fitness issues too, and when speaking to BBC NI (via Glasgow Times) admitted his focus isn’t on a new deal beyond this season.

“That’s nothing unusual,” he said when asked about his contract situation. “I’ve been in a similar situation the last couple of years and there’s no sort of pressure from that side of things.

“Basically, the most important thing for me is to get back fit and whenever I get in that rhythm I have confidence in my ability and what I can still do on the pitch.

“That’s all my focus is on at this moment in time.

“I’ve got to that stage of my career where I don’t really look too far ahead and I obviously need to see what happens in the summer with my career in general.

“My only focus at the minute is getting myself back fit and trying to get myself back into the team at Rangers for an important run-in.

“We’ll see where everything sits after that.”

Time to go

This summer is a huge one for Rangers when it comes to rebuilding their squad, and the letting Davis go won’t be that big an issue at the end of the day.

A great midfielder in his day, the club and squad have moved past a need for him at this stage and with so many other areas needing addressing too it’s no biggie to add one more.

Davis is easily replaceable considering his lack of appearances since Van Bronckhorst came in and with fitness concerns too it’s almost a given that he won’t be kept on.

The club can now start planning ahead and with several players out of contract this summer and next summer, big decisions need to be made across the club.

Priorities need to be decided upon in who to keep, and there’s no way Davis should come out on top there either. It’s been a good run and he’s been a great servant, but it’s time to part ways.
