Keith Jackson slams Rangers fans after protests during Dundee clash

Keith Jackson has suggested that Rangers fans could do “terminal damage” with their protests and help Celtic land the title.

Writing his column for The Daily Record, Jackson finds the shattering relationship between the club and the fans as “extraordinary.”

The Gers fans protested at Dens Park which disrupted the flow of the game. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side eventually won 2-1, with goals from Aaron Ramsey and Connor Goldson sealing all three points.

Ever since the Gers have come up with a controversial plan to stage a lucrative Old Firm friendly in Australia later this year, the fans have voiced their frustrations.

At Dens Park, the fans threw toilet rolls and tennis balls on the ground, and it hampered the flow of the game.

“The shattering disconnect between this club and its fan base at such a moment in history, is bordering on the extraordinary and it all came spewing out again yesterday with another protest against the controversial plan to stage a lucrative Old Firm friendly in Australia later this year,” wrote Jackson for The Daily Record.

“A noisy, militant section of the Rangers support is now in full-scale revolt and they seemed not to care yesterday that their actions – which caused a series of delays – might distract their own players and do terminal damage to their chances of hanging onto Celtic’s coattails.”

Spot on

Jackson is absolutely spot on with his observation. In the first half, Rangers really struggled to create clear-cut openings.

The disruptions didn’t help either. Veteran goalkeeper Allan McGregor was furious as well as his side was trying to cancel out Christie Elliott’s early opening goal.

The fans have the right to protest, but it shouldn’t hamper the on-pitch performances. They can lay the blame on the mess created at the boardroom level but the fractured relationship shouldn’t affect the team.

This has come at a time when the team needs the support of the fans. Rangers moved into the last-eight of the Europa League, and they are firmly in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.

The Gers will face Braga in the quarter-finals and they should feel confident of winning the two-legged tie. It could be a historic campaign for them, but disruptions off the pitch could ruin all the good work.
