Dundee defender Jordan McGhee should have seen red v Rangers – Keith Hackett

Keith Hackett has insisted that Dundee defender Jordan McGhee should have seen red against Rangers on Sunday (20 March).

Despite not agreeing with the decision, the ex-FIFA official admitted that if Bobby Madden pointed to the spot, it had to be a red card too.

McGhee was instead booked by Madden, with James Tavernier then firing his spot-kick over the bar in a strange couple of minutes at Dens Park.

“Absolutely,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“Because he’s not attempted to play the ball. There are no covering defenders, it’s bizarre. It doesn’t matter about the foul, what he has to determine is to give a yellow on a denial is, is the defender who has committed the offence making a genuine attempt for the ball? He doesn’t.

“He needs to go back to the drawing board and look at the laws of the game. It’s unusual for him [Bobby Madden].”

Clear.

This is spot on.

Madden has given the penalty for what we all assume was the denial of a goalscoring opportunity on Alfredo Morelos.

So, was McGhee making an attempt for the ball? No, because he was nearly pulling the shirt off of his back after the deep cross.

Madden has come under heavy scrutiny in recent months, and this decision has certainly not helped his cause either way.
