BBC Sportscene pundit slams Goldson for ‘doing nothing’ as footage emerges after Rangers win v Dundee

Richard Foster slammed Connor Goldson for “doing nothing” when Dundee scored against Rangers at Dens Park on Sunday.

Christie Elliott shocked the Scottish Premiership title-chasers in the sixth minute as Dundee made the most of some woeful defending by Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.

Goldson did go from zero to hero as the game went on with the 29-year-old defender scoring Rangers’ 86th-minute winner.

However, after Elliott’s early goal, BBC Sportscene pundit Foster wasn’t happy with Goldson’s defending and the lack of communication between him and Calvin Bassey.

“Great run from [Paul] McMullen, drags Bassey all the way in and then gives Elliott space,” said Foster on BBC Sportscene on Sunday night [20 March, 07:33pm].

“Here, for me, Goldson is doing nothing.

“If I’m Calvin Bassey, I’m calling Goldson back and then I’m taking Christie Elliott at the back post.

“With all respect, yes, Ryan Kent should maybe do better. But you don’t want Ryan Kent in that position defending his back post against Christie Elliott, someone who is really good in the air.

“That’s an area Dundee targetted all game because they knew he was dominant in the air.

“Rangers were all over the shop defensively.”

Woeful

It’s not the first time this season when Goldson has massively let the Rangers fans down with his terrible defending.

Whether it’s that last season was a one-off where he overachieved or whether this season he’s been distracted by off-the-field issues, it’s not been good enough from the former Brighton defender.

Goldson’s contract expires in the summer and a lot of the time this term, he’s played like a player who isn’t fully committed and has already made his mind up about leaving.

But we really don’t get that attitude if that’s the case.

Who’d want to sign a player who’s performing badly every week? Who’d want to sign a player who’s mentally checked out before a season has started? Who’d want a player who’s playing hardball over contract negotiations?

Goldson’s best hope would be a move to the English Championship. Who in the English Premier League would want him in all seriousness?

He’s better off staying with us and even though he’s grabbed some big goals and stole the headlines at Ibrox at times, we think the ship has sailed for the Englishman.
