Celtic-crazy Chris Iwelumo wants SPFL to do more to support Rangers to win Europa League

Chris Iwelumo has urged the SPFL to do more to support Rangers in their quest to become Europa League champions.

Despite his Celtic loyalty, he believes that the league must make it easier for the teams that progress in continental competitions.

Gers have progressed to the last eight of the Europa League where they will face off against Portuguese side Braga.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Iwelumo said, “It’s fantastic, great for Scottish football but I do have a little bee bonnet about the fixtures.

“I think the SPFL can definitely make it a little bit easier for Scottish teams when they get into the latter stages of competitions.

“You know where my loyalties lie, I am a Celtic fan, but I am delighted that a Scottish team is doing well in Europe, albeit it is Rangers.”

Makes a fair point

In Spain, La Liga does the same for its teams and ensures that they have the weekend off.

This not only gives their teams much-needed rest but progress in Europe increases the league coefficient.

The SPFL are not planning long term and only focused on their domestic league.

A better coefficient will increase the quality of the league and see clubs sign players keen on playing in the Champions League and Europa League.

While salaries may still be an issue, players with ambition would not mind moving to Scotland if they could showcase their skills on such a large platform.

Something worth considering for next season, maybe?

In other Rangers news, the club may sign a Dutch international to replace Allan McGregor and the keeper’s contract also expires in the summer.
