Owen Hargreaves praises ‘world class’ Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor

Owen Hargreaves believes Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has been ‘world class’ during their Europa League campaign this season.

The Light Blues secured their passage to the quarter-finals stage for the first time since 2008 with an aggregate win over Red Star, with McGregor shining in both legs with amazing saves.

Now Hargreaves, who was working as a pundit on BT Sport, believes those types of performances are what you need to be able to play at that level and praised the 40-year-old.

“He’s made some huge saves, world-class saves at key moments,” he said, as quoted by Daily Record.

“To think he’s 40 and the level he’s playing at. You need a great goalkeeper and he’s been that for them.”

Justified

McGregor has come under fire since the turn of the year for making several mistakes in games and essentially costing Rangers the top spot in the Scottish Premiership.

But while fans and pundits were calling for him to be dropped from the team to let John McLaughlin have a run, Giovanni van Bronckhorst stuck by his man and has now been justified in doing so.

With the squad finding rhythm again and getting results, McGregor has been key to that with huge performances and remarkable saves at key times.

At 40-years-old there’s no disputing that he’s coming to the end of his time at the top level, but while he’s performing this way there’s no need for the club to look elsewhere.

With Europa League ties against Braga upcoming, and if they’re successful they’ll take on the winner of Atalanta and RB Leipzig. There’s a huge opportunity to get to the final, and McGregor will be key if they are to succeed.
