‘Best in the business’ – Kris Boyd defends Rangers keeper Allan McGregor

Kris Boyd has blasted the ‘idiots’ who have criticised Allan McGregor this season and says the Rangers ace is the ‘best in the business’.

McGregor was in brilliant form as the Bears progressed to the Europa League quarter-finals with an aggregate victory over Red Star Belgrade.

Boyd, who played alongside him during his time at Ibrox, wrote in his Scottish Sun column that the 40-year-old was a hero for his performance and says the club will struggle to replace him when he eventually hangs up his gloves.

“Speaking of heroes, what about Greegsy’s saves in Belgrade?” he said. “Some idiots still complain that he doesn’t come for crosses.

“Let me tell you, he didn’t come for crosses when he was 20, so he’s not going to start at 40.

“He’s the best in the business at making saves and his performance in Belgrade took me all the way back to Bremen in 2008.

“When he needs to stand up and be counted, he’s always there. Just remember the penalty save in the first leg against Red Star.

“Whatever some might think of him, good luck trying to replace him.”

Legend

There is no doubting that McGregor will go down in history as a Rangers legend, but that status will be further cemented if he helps them to yet another European final.

His form took a big dip at the start of the year and he was heavily criticised, with many calling for number two John McLaughlin to be brought in for a run of games.

But Giovanni van Bronckhorst stuck by his man and has been rewarded by a series of top level performances in recent weeks.

Eventually the club need to look at replacing him, because he won’t last forever and at 40-years-old he’s nearing the end of his career.

But the longer they can keep hold of him while he’s playing at this level the better, because there aren’t any better than him in Scotland and he’s still one of the best on the continent right now too.
