Tory political advisor: Rangers win on St Patrick’s Day ‘great banter’

Political advisor Dan McCroskrie believes it’s “great banter” that Rangers secured their spot in the Europa League quarter-finals on St Patrick’s Day.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side lost 2-1 to Red Star Belgrade in Serbia on Thursday but their comprehensive 3-0 win in the first leg at Ibrox was enough for them to reach the last eight.

McCroskrie’s Twitter account says he’s a political advisor while his LinkedIn page says he manages the parliamentary and regional offices of Conservative MSP Donald Cameron.

After the aggregate win over Red Star, McCroskrie took to social media to point out that the Gers progressed to the quarter-finals as the Irish celebrated St Patrick’s Day.

“Rangers getting through to the quarter finals of a major European competition on St Patrick’s Day is great banter,” said McCroskrie via his personal Twitter account on Thursday [17 March] after the game.

So what?

Rangers lost to Red Star Belgrade on 17 March. We won the overall tie, obviously, but what is there here for someone to gloat about?

Celtic aren’t in European football, mock them for that.

Why do some Rangers fans have to take it to the point where they’re mocking Celtic’s Irish culture instead of just looking at this as simply a football rivalry?

We don’t care for it and a lot of level-headed Gers fans probably feel the same because we love the banter between the two Old Firm rivals on a pure football basis. It doesn’t need to go further than that, the rivalry is brilliant enough.

McCroskrie is a Rangers fan but he’s someone who’s in a position where he should know better than to have a reaction like this.

Just forget about it. Stop making everything about them.
