Rangers period was ‘wonderful’ for Ibrox flop Eros Grezda

Rangers have had a lot of players who haven’t quite lived up to their billing at Ibrox but few have flopped like Eros Grezda did.

The Albanian joined the Light Blues in 2018 Croatian top division side Osijek with big hopes of being a star in Glasgow but injuries curtailed his time in Scotland.

He left two years later in favour of a return to the club he left to join the Gers from having played just 17 times with two goals to his name in all competitions.

The 26-year-old has spoken about his time with the club in an interview with Germanijak and still holds the club dear to his heart despite his time at Ibrox not going to plan.

“It was wonderful for me in Rangers, a great club, fans, tradition,” Grezda said. “I, unfortunately, didn’t play the famous Old Firm derby due to injury, and I didn’t compete once.

“But these are really special matches, the atmosphere that prevails before the derby, in everything.”

No big miss

Things might have been very different for Grezda in Scotland had those niggling injuries stayed away but that is sometimes the way the cookie crumbles in football.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst never got the chance to assess him against the rest of the current Rangers squad having arrived well over a year after the Albanian left but you can’t imagine he’s losing sleep at night because of it.

If Grezda had scored 17 in 17 rather than just two then maybe he would be a miss but he never pulled up any trees and one would doubt that any Rangers fan would desire for his return.

The boss has more than enough in wide areas to not be ruing the 26-year-old’s departure prior to his own arrival with Fashion Sakala and Amad Diallo both way beyond Grezda as the backups.

His desire to play in the Old Firm derby is understandable but no one else was angling for him to get that chance in all honesty.

In other Rangers news, fans in Australia will get Old Firm derby tickets 58% cheaper than those in Glasgow.
