Connor Goldson delights BBC pundit Colin Hendry in 1st half of Rangers v Dundee

Rangers got off to the perfect start in their Scottish Cup game away at Dundee as Connor Goldson slammed the Gers ahead within nine minutes.

The 29-year-old was in the right place at the right time to eventually convert a James Tavernier corner that had previously been headed onto the bar by Filip Helander and some thought the Swede had scored.

Goldson wasn’t interested in the debate and made sure there could be no questions asked as he thundered the ball home from just a few yards out.

BBC Radio Scotland commentator Colin Hendry loved what he saw from the centre-half as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side asserted their dominance early.

“Great finish, I don’t think the initial attempt when it came off the crossbar was over the line, we’ve not got goal-line technology here,” Hendry said.

“That certainly did cross the line from Connor Goldson; great finish and he didn’t think twice about it”

Perfect start

Something Rangers have struggled with domestically is being able to put games to bed early with a number of recent games ending either with a slender one-goal winning margin or not at all.

Their focus on the Europa League is understandable and it always looks like a different side entirely when they are playing under those Thursday night lights.

van Bronckhorst needs to find a way of getting that continental form to transition into their domestic competitions and this was a good start to doing that.

Celtic are already clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership and further dropped points might just end their hopes of retaining the title.

Things are different in the Scottish Cup though and it seems to be the knockout format that clicks with the Light Blues.

In other Rangers news, Mark Hateley doesn’t want to see the Gers’ side changed just to accommodate this one player.
