BBC Sportsound pundit staggered by ‘incredible’ Rangers v Dundee controversial moment

Willie Miller was staggered by an early refereeing blunder as Rangers beat Dundee 3-0 in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals at Dens Park on Sunday.

Inside the first five minutes, whistler Steven McLean awarded the Gers an indirect free-kick after Dundee goalkeeper Harry Sharp picked up a sliced clearance from Cammy Kerr.

BBC Sport journalist Colin Moffat described it as a “crazy” decision by McLean before Rangers failed to profit from the blunder.

And ex-Aberdeen and Scotland defender Miller was equally as baffled.

“It’s just silly refereeing. Incredible,” said Miller on BBC Sportsound, as quoted on the BBC Sport website on Sunday (13 March, 04:08pm).

Scottish refs… Wow

We have to admit that McLean had a stinker in the middle on Sunday.

While we would have won that game without the referee having a shocker, McLean certainly didn’t help Dundee.

It took some looking at but he seemed to get the penalty decision correct but the state of the refereeing in Scotland is a joke.

It’s no shock that VAR could be introduced as early as next season with referees working on the controversial system behind the scenes when matches are being played.

VAR has been a success in some countries in the world but we’ve seen south of the border that it’s been an absolute calamity.

Do we have faith in the likes of Willie Collum being able to use VAR properly and oversee an improvement in matchday decisions?

Absolutely not.

But it should at least give the referees nowhere to hide when they do make their weekly shockers.
