Chris Sutton hails ‘unbelievable’ Allan McGregor performance in Rangers win v Red Star

Chris Sutton says Allan McGregor’s performance for Rangers against Red Star was ‘unbelievable’, naming him as their best player on the night for BT Sport.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper saved a penalty and made some big saves as the Bears earned a huge 3-0 win at Ibrox to take back to Belgrade for the second leg next week.

But despite three goals scored, Sutton told BT Scottish Sport Extra that it was McGregor’s ‘big performance’ that was most impressive of all.

“I thought McGregor was unbelievable in goal for Rangers,” he said. “Unbelievable. Rangers went 2-0 up and you’re thinking, ‘how on Earth have they gone 2-0 up?’ because Red Star really dominated the early exchanges.

“I think Ryan Kent got away with one there really. VAR helping Rangers once again this season. You couldn’t make it up. I don’t think it should’ve been a penalty.

“Brilliantly tucked away by Tavernier. I’ve got to say the finish from Morelos – top, top drawer the way he tucked that away.

“But McGregor really came into his own. I thought McGregor was the best player for Rangers, a big performance. Fair play to them.”

High praise

Considering Rangers were highly praised for their performance on Thursday night and how they took the game to Red Star, it’s high praise for McGregor to be labelled as the best player.

His penalty save was exceptional, but he also made big claims from crosses, communicated well with his defence throughout and made some top saves to keep a clean sheet.

With all the criticism that he has faced over recent months because of the mistakes he has made, it’s encouraging to see him not let it affect him too much and get back to his best at a key moment in the season.

With the Light Blues chasing Celtic down in order to claim their second consecutive Scottish Premiership title, they need their key players at an optimum level of performance.

McGregor is still the best goalkeeper in Scotland, despite his recent troubles, so it’s great that he’s showing that now.
