‘Wow’ – Alex Rae stunned by what he saw Allan McGregor did v Red Star
BT Sport commentator Alex Rae was left absolutely stunned by Allan McGregor’s penalty save for Rangers during the first half against Red Star in the Europa League.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead early on at Ibrox thanks to goals by James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos, before Ryan Jack tripped a Red Star attacker to give the Serbians a chance to get back into the game.
Star man Aleksandar Katai stepped up and blasted the ball right in the corner down to McGregor’s right hand side, but the 40-year-old former Scotland international got down quickly and got a strong arm to it forcing a corner.
The Ibrox crowd went wild and BT Sport commentator Alex Rae couldn’t contain himself afterwards, calling the stop ‘incredible’.
“Wow,” he exclaimed live on air. “That’s an incredible save. The 40-year-old comes to Rangers’ rescue.”
It was a remarkable save and one hell of a way to get the critics off his back after what’s been a tough few weeks.
Redeemed himself
McGregor has had a tough time of it since the turn of the year, with several high profile mistakes domestically, but that save has arguably won everyone back.
He’s been told he should have retired, there have been calls for him to be dropped and yet Giovanni van Bronckhorst has stuck by him and been rewarded for it.

It was brilliant reactions from the veteran, and the fact he managed to shift the ball out of play rather than back into a danger zone made it even better.
It continued the wave of momentum in the game in the home side’s favour, with fans going absolutely wild and spirits staying high among players having previously raced into the lead.
His leadership, experience and standing among his peers certainly came into play, with fans trusting in him to make the save also and adding more pressure onto the opponent. What a moment.
