Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos on verge of stunning European feat

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos produced a superb performance as the Gers won 3-0 against Red Star Belgrade on Thursday (10 March).

Two goals in the first half from James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos had set the tone, while Leon Balogun added another in the second half as the Gers took a comfortable lead going into the second leg.

Morelos was once again superb on the night for the Bears, with the Scottish Daily Express hailing his performance as “sensational”.

The Colombian striker has now scored 28 European goals for Rangers. It was his 32nd goal in the Europa League (including four for HJK Helsinki), and he is in third place in the tournament’s all-time scoring charts.

Only Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (34) and Henrik Larsson (41) have scored more goals than him. He can beat Huntelaar this season and would only 7 more goals to become the record scorer after that.

He has scored over 100 goals for the club, with 19 of them coming in this season in all competitions.

Morelos struggled a bit in the early part of the season, drawing criticism from some of the pundits.

However, he seems a player rejuvenated following the appointment of Van Bronckhorst who has made him his first-choice striker.

Rangers will need him to deliver once more in the return leg to book a place in the quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years.

It would be a great personal milestone for him if he becomes the top scorer in Europa League, and he can achieve that at Rangers.

Morelos should consider staying at the club for at least a few years to achieve the remarkable target.

Rangers visit Dundee in the Scottish Cup on Sunday and the Dutchman will be tempted to rest some of the players for that game with next week’s trip to Belgrade in mind.
