Owen Hargreaves hails ‘perfect’ Rangers performance v Red Star

Former Champions League winner Owen Hargreaves has hailed an almost ‘perfect performance’ by Rangers after their 3-0 win over Red Star in the Europa League.

Goals from James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos and Leon Balogun sealed a marvellous result for the Light Blues on the night to take through to the second leg next week.

But Red Star had three goals disallowed for offside and missed a penalty after a stunning Allan McGregor save, which Hargreaves told BT Sport contributed to ‘almost a perfect performance’ at Ibrox.

“The fairytale continues,” he said.

“Ibrox is one of the best places to play football, the fans are right up for it.

“Virtually everything went their way: three offside goals, penalty save from McGregor. In a way, it was almost a perfect performance from Rangers.”

Amazing

It was an amazing game of football, full of incident and excitement and the best part of it all was that Rangers came away victorious at the end of it.

They were fully deserving of their win, and while the scoreline was arguably a little bit lopsided based on the balance of play, it was a great performance.

Hargreaves called it a fairytale, but Rangers are playing like a team that absolutely deserve to be where they are and they need to keep their head firmly on their shoulders.

They’re in a great position to get through to the quarter-finals, and once they’re there then anything can happen. But they’re not there yet and they have to perform as if they know that.

Red Star showed they can hurt them if they get it right next week, and it will be a hostile environment, but it was a near perfect showing from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side and they deserve all the praise for it.
