Derek McInnes slams ‘numpties’ for doubting Rangers keeper Allan McGregor

Derek McInnes has blasted the ‘numpties’ that criticised Allan McGregor recently, after his penalty save for Rangers in their 3-0 win over Red Star.

Rangers cruised to a 3-0 win thanks to goals from James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos and Leon Balogun but had McGregor to thank for a stunning penalty save by McGregor in the first half when it was 2-0.

The 40-year-old has been criticised heavily since the turn of the year for making several mistakes, but McInnes branded those people ‘numpties’ live on BT Sport after the game and said he makes up for it with stuff like the penalty save.

“He’s been such a key player for Rangers over the years,” he said.

“Time and time again he comes up with key moments. All these numpties that criticise him, say he’s done and all the rest of it: you make a mistake when you’re a goalkeeper, and he has made a few, but he more than makes up with it with stuff like that.

“That’s an outstanding save.”

Redeemed himself

What a performance from McGregor that Ibrox got to witness during the game against Red Star.

It was a brilliant attacking performance from the Bears but without the performance of the shot-stopper between the sticks then it would have all been for nothing.

It’s easy to forget that Red Star had three goals correctly disallowed for offside, and McGregor made some great saves when he was called upon.

His form hasn’t been good in recent weeks and some of the criticism has been justified considering it’s essentially cost the team top spot in the Scottish Premiership behind Celtic.

But some of it has gone way too far and his age almost made him an easy scapegoat for people to target as the team faltered. He has proven now though he is still capable at that level and he won’t be the reason if Rangers fail to take advantage of the position they’re in to win trophies.
