Keith Hackett: Rangers goal and Aberdeen complaints is why Scotland wants VAR

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive Rangers columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox

Keith Hackett has insisted that Aberdeen complaints about the Rangers’ goal on Saturday are exactly why Scotland wants VAR.

The ex-FIFA official admitted that it would have given the referee a second look, but did agree with his initial call of no foul.

Jim Goodwin accused Calvin Bassey of a foul in the build-up to Kemar Roofe’s winner, but Hackett believes that there was nowhere near enough contact to give it.

“It would have been harsh,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“It’s that aerial challenge, I think to rule a goal out, you’ve got to be absolutely 100% that a foul has been committed.

For me, I think I’m letting that go and going with the referee, I think it does highlight the fact that with VAR, there is always a second opportunity to have a look which they don’t have in Scotland.

“This is why they want VAR. I think that’s a good goal, it’s a contact sport.”

No complaints.

There was never enough contact to make Calvin Ramsay go to the ground but we expected Goodwin’s reaction as the manager is always going to back his players.

A quick second look on VAR would have silenced those complaints, but if the likes of Aberdeen don’t agree, then why don’t they cough up the cash for the technology?

It is becoming a weekly occurrence that officials are getting big calls wrong and we all take aim when that happens, so they need to be praised when they get contentious calls such as this one right.

Hopefully, the technology can be brought in and at the end of the day, it is there to help the officials, they certainly need it.
