Cedric Itten should have no Rangers future after B team sub Tony Weston scores twice

Rangers B team advanced in the Glasgow Cup as they overcame Queens Park 2-0 but it wasn’t the redemption story one player wanted.

Manager David McCallum gave a chance to striker Cedric Itten who hasn’t played for the senior team since a substitute appearance in the Scottish Cup against Annan Athletic.

But Giovanni van Bronckhorst won’t have been encouraged by what he saw from the Swiss and his Ibrox future may hang in the balance as a result.

The 25-year-old failed to find the net and was brought off after an hour in favour of English striker Tony Weston.

He made an immediate impact, scoring twice off the bench to send the B team into the next round and simultaneously pushing Itten’s Rangers future onto the edge of the cliff.

It was never really meant to be any way for the Swiss in Glasgow with Alfredo Morelos the unrivalled starting striker and Kemar Roofe an adequate backup whenever the Colombian is unavailable.

The up and coming stars in the Light Blues academy can’t afford to have too many players in their way when it comes to development and for Weston to come off the bench and score when Itten failed says a lot about both players.

Should a striker crisis hit van Bronckhorst’s senior squad, you wouldn’t blame him for selecting Weston over Itten on the face of this performance.

Maybe he doesn’t have the experience the boss might like but there is only one way these talented teenagers get it and that is by playing games.

Whatever your thoughts on Weston’s readiness for senior football, we can all agree that Itten’s time at Ibrox is coming to an end and the sooner he is let go the better.
