Simon Jordan lashes out at Rangers fans over Old Firm friendly stance

Simon Jordan has lashed out at Rangers fans for their stance against playing a mid-season friendly against Celtic in Australia later this year.

The two Old Firm clubs announced their participation in a friendly tournament in Australia in November last week, and were met with huge backlash immediately after and during their games since.

But after a fan texted in to his talkSPORT show on Monday morning [11:54, March 7th], Jordan bit back over claims the fans were being commercialised by pointing out the money earned would be put back into the clubs for the fan’s benefit.

“Who is commercialising you?” he said.

“Okay, I understand the dynamic but who’s commercialising you? You’re not going to it, so the revenue is being paid for by other people going to it so who is commercialising you?

“That £4m is going back into your club, to be spent on players that you can watch, so I don’t understand his argument.”

Emotion

Jordan pointed out during the segment that fans’ opinions on the game were simply because the famous Old Firm rivalry was essentially being pimped out for cash.

While he admits it’s true and that the fans are against that because the game means more than just football, he wanted to make it clear he understood.

The game is being cherry picked by billionaires abroad and taken away from the fans for cash, which doesn’t line with the traditions of either club or their fans.

Yes the money will go back into the clubs, but there’s no guarantee of that happening and surely there are other ways to make extra money without chastising the fans.

Jordan’s argument was valid, and he admitted that he wasn’t emotionally invested like the fans were, but on this occasion the traditions of the rivalry should be upheld and both clubs should walk away from this planned deal for the benefit of their reputation with the fans.
