‘Utter madness’ – Kris Boyd slams Rangers for Old Firm friendly plans in Australia

Kris Boyd has slammed Rangers for their planned Old Firm ‘friendly’ in Australia in November, labelling it ‘utter madness’ in his Scottish Sun column.

The two clubs announced plans for a lucrative mid-season tournament down under at the end of the year, which received plenty of backlash from both sets of fans in the week.

Now Boyd, who scored 138 goals in 234 games for the Bears during his career, has blasted the two clubs for their plans and says it’s Rangers who should take responsibility and cancel it.

“Qantas Airlines don’t have a plane big enough to carry the amount of baggage that goes with the Old Firm,” he said.

“The sooner someone at Rangers or Celtic realises that and cancels this brainless idea for a ‘friendly’ in Sydney, the better. The two sets of supporters aren’t having it and neither am I.

“It’s utter madness to arrange this derby game on the other side of the world, and think it’s going to be some sort of football festival in the Aussie sunshine.

“I’m sorry, but it must be stopped, and for me, it’s down to Rangers to stop it.

“The two clubs just aren’t capable of dealing with this fixture on any neutral ground.”

Crazy

The suggestion that a fixture of this magnitude, with this level of rivalry, can be played for fun in the sun abroad is just abhorrent.

Rangers and Celtic fans’ rivalries goes far beyond football and while it’s obviously a money maker for owners and potential partners, there’s a reason the game has never happened outside of Scotland before.

Some things are more important than money in football and that means that traditions need to be kept and common sense needs to come out on top sometimes.

The fans don’t want this game to happen, so what is the point of doing it other than for financial gain? There isn’t one.

Whether it’s Rangers or Celtic who firm up and take the hit by pulling out is irrelevant, but the Ibrox board would go some way to fixing things with the people in the stands by holding their hands up, admitting they’ve made a mistake, and putting an end to this craziness.
