Graeme Souness believes Rangers shouldn’t prioritise the Scottish Premiership title or the Europa League, and instead look to win both.
The Light Blues progressed into the Europa League last 16 with a stunning win over Borussia Dortmund over two legs, while they’re just three points behind Celtic in the race for consecutive Scottish titles too.
But after poor results in the league following European games, Souness has poured cold water on the idea that the continent is too big of a burden for Giovanni van Bronckhorst, telling Daily Record they should be looking to win both tournaments.
“No,” he said defiantly. “Only if injuries kick in. The confidence you get from winning big games kicks you on.
“If you gave me the choice between the league or Europe, I couldn’t give you one. I’d want both.
“You don’t want to get knocked out and your season falls apart. You can’t think like that.
“You want both. We can go on a run, winning games breeds confidence to go in to the next games.”
Winning mentality
Souness is well known for his old school thoughts and opinions, but he is spot on in this instance.
Rangers aren’t a small club. They shouldn’t be using one competition as an excuse for not winning another, which it seems to be right now.
But after dismantling Dortmund in Germany and then earning a positive result at Ibrox too, the club are now on the watchlist for all the top clubs in Europe just in case they have to cross paths with the Bears.
That should breathe confidence into the players and coaching staff, not doubts, and that should push the momentum over into the league campaign and help them push Celtic all the way.
They already blew a lead at the top of the Premiership and are now the hunters rather than the hunted, but they have every chance of claiming a second title and being successful in Europe with their squad.
