Barry Ferguson drools over Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has faced criticisms from the fans recently, but Barry Ferguson feels that he is still the best in his position in the country.

The 40-year-old came under fire once again after last Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Motherwell at Ibrox.

Despite taking a two-goal lead, the Gers had let the advantage slip through their fingers with McGregor was at fault for at least one of the second-half goals.

Charlie Nicholas wrote in the Daily Express column that Rangers should drop McGregor or else risk losing the title, but Ferguson feels the veteran stopper should hold his place despite his recent mistakes.

Ferguson wrote in his column (4 March) for The Daily Record: “I’m telling you now, this guy is still the best goalkeeper in Scotland, never mind at Ibrox.

“And if you take him out of that team right now you might just be throwing away the title while you’re at it.

“The guy’s 40, of course his reflexes are not as sharp as they used to be. Yes errors are creeping in that weren’t there before. But the reason they’ve been highlighted and discussed so much is because this is a man who hardly ever gets it wrong. That’s why he’s still the best in the land.

“And to be perfectly honest I’m frustrated and surprised that some people out there don’t realise what they’ve got in this guy. He’ll walk through walls for them.”

Not really

A manager should not be driven by sentiments rather he should only think about what’s best for his side.

McGregor is a top-class goalkeeper, no doubt, but he is becoming error-prone. Probably because of his age, he is losing a bit of reflex.

Obviously, he loves Rangers and will want to rectify his errors, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be taken away from the firing line at the moment.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst can drop him for a few games which should motivate him to get back to the starting line-up, which in turn could get the best out of him.

The Gers have got Jon McLaughlin and academy graduate Robbie McCrorie at their disposal, and the Dutchman could look to shuffle his goalkeeping options here.

While Rangers are doing exceptionally well in European games, reaching the knock-out stages of the Europa League, it’s their stuttering form in the league is becoming a huge concern.
