Rangers poor performance can’t be blamed on St Johnstone pitch

Rangers scraped past St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership last night as Glen Kamara scored the only goal of the game at McDiarmid Park.

It was far from a vintage Light Blues display but they secured the three points nonetheless to keep up with title rivals Celtic who won 2-0 against St Mirren.

Goalscorer Kamara spoke after the game and admitted that the pitch wasn’t easy to play on but the players were pleased to have won.

“The early goal helped us, the pitch wasn’t easy to play on but we are happy to take the three points home,” Kamara said to Rangers TV.

“There were a lot of tussles tonight, a lot of second balls and the pitch probably didn’t help us but the boys did well. We are happy to get the points.”

The Finland international may not have enjoyed the conditions but it is no excuse for such a poor performance.

It’s not like the Saints were playing on a different pitch; it was the same for both teams and you haven’t seen the home side complain once despite losing.

Kamara’s comments highlight the spoilt way of modern footballers who seem to assume every pitch will be a carpet and that is never the case.

St Johnstone are entitled to prepare their pitch however they wish and as long as it is playable, they can have ruts everywhere.

The same applies to Rangers too if they wanted to make the Ibrox pitch a very unpleasant one to play on but they choose to produce the smooth surface instead.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has to get this into his players’ heads because McDiarmid Park won’t be the only bobbly pitch they play on this season.
