Ibrox View: Scott Arfield must be dropped for Rangers v Aberdeen

Rangers simply have to make changes against Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon in the Scottish Premiership.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is not using his bench in games, and it is really starting to become a problem at Ibrox.

After labouring to a 1-0 win at St Johnstone, there are a number of faces who really are facing the drop at this moment.

The first of those is Scott Arfield.

It was yet another poor league performance from the Canadian, who appears to struggle domestically.

In the Europa League where teams may have more of the ball and a big press is needed, Arfield shines on all levels.

But, when Scottish Premiership teams come and deploy a low block and give us more of the ball, the midfielder can’t do the same offensively.

Poor.

Looking at the stats via WhoScored, Arfield only completed 40 touches of the ball – the least of any outfield player for the away side.

Allan McGregor had 23, and that was in a game where he was barely used due to the shocking surface at McDiarmid Park.

Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent were once again at the heart of everything, but even Calvin Bassey had over 100 touches – showing the impact of Arfield was nearly non-existent compared.

Van Bronckhorst needs to bring some pace and creativity into that attacking midfield role, and that will come from either Amad Diallo or Fashion Sakala.

The latter did start and score against Motherwell over the weekend, so it appeared strange that he was dropped last night.

Changes are desperately needed, let’s hope they come.
