David Tanner slams state of St Johnstone pitch as Rangers struggle to 1-0 win in Perth
David Tanner has slammed the state of the pitch at McDiarmid Park after Rangers beat St Johnstone 1-0 in Perth on Wednesday night.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side laboured to a win on the cut-up pitch at McDiarmid Park, which clearly had an effect on the quality of play in the Scottish Premiership clash.
Although talkSPORT broadcaster Tanner isn’t keen on plastic pitches, it seems he’d rather see them used than pitches like the one at St Johnstone.

“I am not a fan of 3G pitches in the top league. Plastic pitches are a comprise but not as much as McDiarmid Park at the moment. What a state,” said Tanner via his personal Twitter account straight after the Scottish Premiership game on Wednesday night.
“Giovanni Van Bronckhorst clearly doesn’t fancy his bench.”
Not good enough
The SPFL needs to have a higher standard for pitches than what we saw at St Johnstone on Wednesday night.
Scottish clubs will always struggle to bring in top quality players when they see the state of the cabbage patches in our league, who’d want to come here and risk getting an injury at McDiarmid Park?
There needs to be some kind of evaluation done on these pitches and clubs should be fined if they do not meet the required standard.
Yes, it costs money but it’s also unacceptable to be playing on pitches that look as though they’ve just hosted two or three rugby matches back-to-back.
We’re not a fan of plastic pitches either but we can see why they would appeal more to clubs than the state of what we saw at St Johnstone.
There just needs to be a better upholding of standards by the SPFL and SFA and that’s something that can benefit absolutely everyone.
It makes us look as though we’re playing in a pub league.
