Rangers yet to offer deal to Schalke goalkeeper Martin Fraisl

Rangers have not yet offered a pre-contract deal to Schalke goalkeeper Martin Fraisl, according to Daily Record journalist Scott Burns.

The newspaper is responding to a report by German news outlet Spox, which on 1 March, claimed that the Gers have offered Fraisl, 28, a two-year contract with the option of an extra year.

Burns reputes this but does report that the Austrian goalkeeper is on Rangers’ radar ahead of the summer transfer window when his contract at Schalke expires.

Upgrades needed

It’s going to be a massive summer for Rangers regardless of what happens in the Scottish Premiership this season.

If we win the league then that’s obviously amazing and it means we’ll have the money gained from playing in the Champions League group stages to use on transfers.

If we don’t, then we may have to rely upon player sales to be able to strengthen Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side – if the Dutchman is still in charge.

Either way, we’re going to have to address the goalkeeper area in the summer because Allan McGregor may be on his way out of Ibrox.

The 40-year-old’s contract is up in the summer and he’s been culpable of some very bad mistakes this season, suggesting that the ex-Scotland international is starting to regress.

Freisl is at a good age for a goalkeeper, he’s been playing regularly for Schalke and also been playing well.

Schalke’s manager Dimitrios Grammozis was very impressed by one of the Austrian’s recent displays, saying he was “fantastic” in a 2-0 win over Paderborn on 18 February [Then24].

Freisl doesn’t seem like a bad option as a free agent signing but maybe the club needs to start moving away from signing players on pre-contracts and instead looking to splash the cash on better quality.
