Joe Aribo struggles as Alfredo Morelos shines – Rangers player ratings v St Johnstone

Rangers returned to winning ways on the road as they battled to a 1-0 win against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Wednesday night.

It was a dull and drab affair in Perth but Glen Kamara’s third-minute goal proved to be enough to secure Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men all three points.

Here, Ibrox News has rated the players out of 10 for their performances at McDiarmid Park:

rangers

Allan McGregor – 5

Had one save to make in the first half but thankfully, it was a very quiet night for McGregor, who’s been error-prone as of late.

James Tavernier – 5

He was unfortunate to not get an assist in the second half when Connor Goldson’s headed goal was disallowed after an impressive cross. He also almost assisted a goal for Ali Crawford when a header back to McGregor was way too short. Fortunately, he recovered well.

Connor Goldson – 6

Goldson was far more composed than he was against Motherwell on Sunday. He covered Balogun well and didn’t really look flustered. Goldson was also vital in Kamara’s goal as his pass into Morelos was what allowed the striker to flick the ball into Kamara’s path.

Leon Balogun – 5

Balogun’s positioning was a bit worrying at times but there was never really anything that got us too worried in regards to the Nigerian centre-back.

Calvin Bassey – 7

Bassey was one of few players to have a decent game. He was always lively on the left, pushing forward whenever he could and also doing a great job defensively.

Glen Kamara – 6

We were all a bit surprised to see Kamara burst into the box after just three minutes to get the opening goal of the game. Away from his goal, his performance wasn’t anything special although he did improve as the game went on.

rangers

Scott Arfield – 5

How many chances did Arfield miss? The Canadian midfielder could and should have scored at least twice at McDiarmid Park. Arfield looks shattered though and doesn’t have the impact he did for van Bronckhorst a few weeks ago.

John Lundstram – 5

Lundstram was back in the midfield after playing at centre-back against Motherwell on Sunday. He didn’t have much of an impact with the ex-Sheffield United midfielder’s form starting to wane.

Joe Aribo – 4

What is it with Rangers midfielders losing their form? Aribo’s form has absolutely nosedived since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations and the Nigerian midfielder could probably do with a rest. Other than one good moment when he played in Arfield, Aribo’s touches, passing and work rate was way below what’s expected of him. He’s gone from one of the best players for van Bronckhorst to one who could probably do with a spell on the bench.

Ryan Kent – 5

Kent struggled in Peth. The English winger is usually so sharp and lively but he didn’t create much of note. He showed some great touches and flicks but he was doing it all way too deep and wasn’t sparkling in the areas that mattered.

rangers

Alfredo Morelos – 8 (Man of the match)

Morelos’ assist for Kamara’s goal was a thing of beauty but the Colombian should have had so much more to show for that performance of his. He held the ball up beautifully and never gave the home side’s defenders a moment of rest. Morelos was easily Rangers’ best player on the night, it’s just a massive shame that no one in the midfield was anywhere near to his level of performance and work ethic.
