Rangers must axe Allan McGregor amid form crisis – Charlie Nicolas

Former Scotland international Charlie Nicholas has heavily criticised Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

The 40-year-old conceded two soft goals in the Gers’ 2-2 draw against Motherwell at Ibrox on Sunday (February 27).

Nicholas called for the veteran to be dropped with his form under question for some time now.

He told Scottish Daily Express: “If Rangers want to finish the season as No. 1 in the Premiership then Allan McGregor needs to be taken out of the firing line.

“The veteran keeper is now looking really vulnerable and even some of his own fans have started to question him.

Giovanni van Bronkhorst now has a big call to make and it could be a dangerous one if he doesn’t make the right one.

“We are getting to the stage in the season now that if McGregor makes a mistake then Rangers could be dead in the water.

“If I was van Bronkhorst then I would be playing Jon McLaughlin or even Robby McCrorie.”

Is McGregor’s time at Rangers coming to an end?

He has been a great servant for the club and will obviously go down as a club legend, but the end might be near for the 40-year-old.

First of all, he has to be respected for performing at the top level for such a long time, not many players could do it.

However, the goalkeeper should leave at the end of the season. He will certainly want to go out on his own terms and if he makes the decision to hang up his boots at the end of the season, there will be no complaints.

The fans have grown increasingly frustrated with the shot-stopper this season with his form in recent weeks costing the Bears points.

Hopefully, he can rediscover his form before he drops down to the bench to be replaced by Jon McLaughlin who will be chomping at the bit to make his mark between the sticks having just signed a new Ibrox contract.
