Keith Hackett drops verdict on VAR after Alfredo Morelos controversy in Rangers draw v Motherwell

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive Rangers columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox

Keith Hackett has insisted that VAR would have solved all controversy in Rangers draw against Motherwell on Sunday.

The ex-FIFA official admitted that he can understand why the assistant referee disallowed two Alfredo Morelos goals for offside.

Having said that, Hackett did admit that the second strike likely should have stood in the end at Ibrox despite the offside flag being raised.

“I think that one is offside,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“I think that is really tight [second decision]. I think with VAR and the broadcast lines, they would have got that as a goal, I think if you’re a linesman in that situation, you flag it.

“With the lines, he is onside, but you can understand why the assistant has flagged. I think if you listen, the game in Scotland has got to go to VAR, these decisions will help, because it will give clarification.

“Generally, it’s settled down now in England. For me, without VAR, that’s offside.”

Embarrassing.

That makes it two games in a row where the officials have cost Rangers big points, points that would have them sitting top right now.

Clear penalties were missed at Dundee United, and the offside calls cost us another three points at Ibrox, it makes no sense.

Clubs may not want to pay out for VAR, but it is getting to the stage where it will be impossible to move forward without it.
