Kris Boyd mocks Connor Goldson after one moment in Rangers Europa League win over Borussia Dortmund

Kris Boyd mocked Connor Goldson after the Rangers defender’s heavy touch allowed Borussia Dortmund to score at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men went on to draw 2-2 in the Europa League second leg, winning 6-4 on aggregate to advance to the last-16.

However, it wasn’t exactly smooth for the Light Blues in the first half when an error by Goldson gifted possession to Jude Bellingham on the edge of the penalty area, as seen in the footage below.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Thursday night [25 February], ex-Gers striker Boyd took a dig at Goldson’s poor ball control.

As shown on Sky Sports Scotland’s Twitter account, he said: “It’s 1-1, it’s Jude Bellingham.

“It was actually a mistake from Rangers.

“Good play from [Donyell] Malen down the right-hand side, he fires a ball in and Connor Goldson should really just go with his left foot and clear it.

“But he decides to try and pass it out of the back and it’s actually a great touch from him if you’re a Borussia Dortmund player because it bounces straight into Jude Bellingham’s path inside the 18-yard box.

“He takes a lovely touch and just rolls it past Allan McGregor in the goal.”

Poor

It was an isolated incident but Goldson’s touch for that goal was terrible and any defender knows you should be doing a lot better in that situation.

Pass it back to the goalkeeper, hoof it into Row Z or actually control it a bit better; there are plenty of things Goldson could have done at that moment.

It seemed like he was a bit of a rabbit in the headlights as Bellingham got close to him and crumbled under the pressure a bit, which isn’t good enough.

Goldson’s had a bad season, especially compared to last term, and that has to be down to the fact that his contract expires in the summer and he’ll more than likely be on his way out of Ibrox.

However, let’s not let that one mistake cover up what was a tremendous result for Rangers against Borussia Dortmund.

Over the two legs, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men were easily the best team and they deserve all the glory of winning against such a prestigious team.

In 2013, we were in the fourth tier of Scottish football while Dortmund were playing in the Champions League final.

Just look at how far we’ve come and there’s one man who we’ve really got to praise for this who many will have looked past and that’s Steven Gerrard because he’s really installed a belief in this set of players that they can perform above and beyond in Europe.
