Chris Sutton applauds Giovanni van Bronckhorst after Rangers knock out Dortmund

Chris Sutton reacted to Rangers knocking Borussia Dortmund out of the Europa League by praising the result and Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Two goals from captain James Tavernier secured a 2-2 draw at Ibrox and completed a 6-4 aggregate win to send the competition favourites home.

An incredible atmosphere in Glasgow inspired the team to another excellent performance to complete the job after the shock win in Dortmund.

The pundit wrote on his personal Twitter account after the final whistle: “Credit where credit is due. To beat Dortmund a German giant over two legs is phenomenal from Rangers. Well done to Giovanni Van Bronckhurst [sic]” along with two clapping emojis.

Night to remember

Such was the quality of the displays in both legs of the tie from Rangers that even one of their main detractors could only hold his hands up and accept how impressive it had been.

The fact that Celtic suffered a second defeat against Bodo/Glimt, to go out of the Europa Conference League earlier in the evening with somewhat of a whimper, probably contributed as well.

The two Old Firm rivals have switched places domestically since the turn of the year.

But you wouldn’t know it from the contrasting atmosphere around both clubs on the past two European nights.

Nagging dropped points have been too regular in the Scottish Premiership for the Light Blues of late.

But Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his players have risen to the occasion in both legs against Bundesliga side Dortmund to fully deserve their place in the draw of the last 16.

A third goal from Ryan Kent was ruled out by the VAR, with Alfredo Morelos very unlucky to be penalised for a foul on Emre Can.

Home and away wins would have been a nice achievement for Gers fans, but judging by the scenes at Ibrox following the final whistle not many were too bothered by that.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist was raging at the decision on the match commentary.
