Erling Haaland does not travel to face Rangers, Thomas Meunier returns

Rangers received a major boost ahead of the Europa League clash with Dortmund as Erling Haaland is not fit, but Thomas Meunier has returned says Sky Sports.

The Norwegian striker has not recovered from his adductor muscle injury and did not travel to Glasgow ahead of the second leg tomorrow night, with the Light Blues leading 4-2 on aggregate.

Belgian wing-back Meunier did get on the plane however having been passed fit after muscular issues of his own.

The former PSG man will likely slot straight into the starting line-up on the right of the defence in a welcome boost for Marco Rose.

Manuel Akanji was pressed into action there in the first leg but is missing with injury, as is Dan-Axel Zagadou.

Strong chance

Giovanni van Bronckhorst goes into the return leg at Ibrox with his opponents almost exactly where he wants them.

The news that the man who has scored 28 times for club and country this season will be missing is a major boost considering anything other than a two-goal defeat puts Gers through.

The late Rafael Guerrero goal in the Westfalenstadion does put a shade of doubt in the mind however.

And with a key part of the shape and operation of the visitors back in Meunier, the Light Blues will still have to deliver a strong performance to finish the job.

Although perhaps not to the extent of last week, surely the tactics should be to continue to attack BVB as they showed last week they could not cope defensively.

With some defensive weaknesses of their own, it would be risky for the Ibrox men to sit back and attempt to soak up pressure for 90 mins.

Either way, having proven themselves away in the major European tie, Rangers will now have the benefit of an Ibrox crowd that will be doing everything it can to will their side to victory.

In other Rangers news, the club stole in to beat another side to one of their major January loan signings.
